Khammam: Farmers of Khammam are happy with cotton being sold at above minimum support price of Rs 5,820 per quintal. Traders offered Rs 6,300 per quintal to them in the Khammam market on Thursday.
Farmers were going to the market instead of the purchase centres being run by the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI). Nearly 1,500 bags of cotton have arrived at the market.
Gudavarti Srinivasa Rao, a trader, that cotton output had fallen which had resulted in the price rise, The cost of 356-kg cotton bales had jumped from Rs 40,000 to Rs 43,000 in the international market, and the local traders were therefore forced to offer higher prices. Bangladesh, Pakistan, Vietnam and China were buying cotton from India.
N. Nageswara Rao, a farmer from Mudigonda, said that the price would cover their input costs. “We will be able to come out from our debts at this price,” he said.
On the other hand, The price of chilli touched Rs 15,000 and traders offered Rs 15,075 as the initial price. About 1,900 bags of chilli were sold in the Khammam market on Thursday. The farmers unions demanded that the government maintain the price to bail out chilli farmers who had fallen into trouble while growing cotton previously.
