Kerala Water Authority, PWD skip meet on Uroos

Without PWD officials, maintenance of drainage in front of the mosque could not be discussed.

Thiruvananthapuram: A review meeting to discuss Beemapalli Uroos festival, to be held from February 28 to March 10, was marked by the conspicuous absence of KWA and PWD officials. Several important issues concerning KWA and PWD could not be discussed, said Beemapally councillor Rasheed. Recently there was a similar problem at the review meetings of Attukal Pongala When KSEB decided to give it a miss. Without PWD officials, the maintenance of the drainage in front of the mosque could not be discussed.

“This drainage is over 60 years' old, and in the event of a rain, extremely dirty water flows through it as many have connected their sewage outlets to it. Its renovation is estimated to cost Rs 80 lakhs. Its repair, which is a short-term solution, is estimated to cost Rs 2 lakhs. The Administrative Sanction on both the works are pending,” said Rasheed. He said he had seen to it that the estimates were submitted six months ago.

The areas near the mosque face severe water shortage, and especially as the water crisis is increasing every day, the presence of KWA officials was paramount, he said. The DMO was also absent at the meeting presided over by Mayor V.K. Prashanth. It was decided to instruct the DMO to arrange for a medical team here. KSEB, Fire and Rescue Services as well as Corporation's health and engineering section officials were present. The Corporation has assured to provide more number of personnel for cleaning. In order to strictly implement green protocol in the festival, Jama'ath authorities have been requested to make it a plastic-free zone before and after the festival.
