Kerala Law Academy talks falter again
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the Action Council Students of Law Academy Law College sticking to its demand for Lakshmi Nair’s resignation, the effort made by education minister C. Raveendranath failed to break the 25-day old impasse. The discussions held by education minister with action council of students comprising KSU, AISF, ABVP, MSF, Girls Action Committee and representatives of management which went on for more than two hours, failed to reach a consensus. The education minister left the meeting in a huff when student representatives especially leaders of AISF accusing him of acting like an advocate of Law Academy and also daring him to act against the principal, .
After the meeting, the management represented by Academy director Narayanan Nair announced that normal classes would be held from Monday. The government and district administration would provide protection for the smooth functioning of the classes. Later education minister said that during the meeting each and every issue related to the Law Academy was discussed in detail. The views of both students and management were heard. “I asked the management representatives to appoint a new principal immediately to which they agreed. Once the new principal takes over obviously the old one will be automatically out,” Mr Raveendranath said. He said the tenure of the new principal, terms and conditions would be decided by the management.
On the issue of Lakshmi Nair continuing in director board, the minister said that the government had no role in that issue. “At the moment the priority should be to create a peaceful academic atmosphere. The probe into other issues including atrocities against dalit students, harassment of girl students and misuse of land can go along,” he said. Meanwhile Law Academy management representatives said the new principal would be appointed soon. When asked about Academy chairman Ayyappan Pillai’s decision to quit, they said no such decision came to their notice yet.
