Nellore police crack whip on bikes with modified silencers
Tirupati: Replacing stock silencers of two-wheelers with loud ones for that high decibel thrills is no more fun. In recent days, the police department in Nellore city began chasing such bikers.
SP Vijaya Rao said the police drive was part of a bid to check noise pollution. “Several youths have been customising their motorbike silencers in ways as to create loud sounds. Use of high-decibel horns and such modified silencers causes nuisance to the public,” he said.
In the past, the police had launched such actions along with the traffic police to nail such bike-riders. Several vehicles were impounded at that time, but the menace saw only a rise among the youths in recent times.
A police team seized around 173 modified silencers from the errant motorbikes and imposed fines on those using them.
On Wednesday, the traffic police destroyed the aftermarket silencers. SP Vijaya Rao said the special drive would continue. Action would be initiated against traders who sell altered silencers and on bike mechanics who fix them,” he said and appealed to the public to follow traffic rules.
