Kerala: Teen bride, now mother of 2, cries for justice

Victim alleges her husband tortured her when she questioned his illicit relationships.

THRISSUR: A Muslim woman with two children who was married while she was studying Plus One and now resides at Kumaranellur at Erumapetti here is planning to move the court and State Women Commission against the alleged physical and mental torture meted out to her at the hands of her husband and his family. Shereefa C.L. who held a press meet in Thrissur on Friday along with her uncle Abdul Azeez and father Latheef C.K. alleged that when she started questioning the relationships of her husband with other women including with one in the family, she was branded as a person having psychiatric issues and subjected to torture.

Her husband is a madrasa teacher and a top functionary of a mahal committee at Chiraman-egadu in his locality. Ms Shereefa said that complaints were filed with Erumapetti police station, Kunnamkulam DySP and rural police superintendent R. Nishanthini, but her grievances were not addressed and now she was planning to move the court. She added that heads of Mahal committee concerned also did not come support her even after repeated requests.

Kunnamkkulam CI Rajesh Menon who held talks between relatives of Shereefa and her husband over the issue told this newspaper that on November 30 he tried his best for a consensus among the couple, but the complainant said she could not stay with her husband. “I don’t wish to comment on the issue of morality and the matter can be settled in the court of law,” he added. As the talk between two parties failed on November 30, in the chamber of Kunnamkulam CI, there was a fight between the two groups and cases were registered against those on both sides.
