Calicut University hikes fellowships for research scholars
KOZHIKODE: The Calicut University has decided to increase the fellowship amount for research scholars. A junior scholar will now get Rs 11,000 and senior fellow Rs 13,000 per month according to the revised system. Earlier it was Rs 4,750 and Rs 6,000 respectively. M.Phil students will get Rs 4,000 per month instead of Rs 1,500 earlier. The syndicate at its meeting also decided to seek the advocate-general's advice on the alleged plagiarism case against former Kerala University pro-vice- chancellor Dr N. Veeramanikandan.
After the allegations of plagiarism, the Calicut University had constituted a seven-member syndicate sub-committee to investigate the matter. The committee in its report had confirmed plagiarism in his thesis. Though the former PVC approached the High Court seeking a stay on the action, the court disposed of the petition directing the syndicate to consider whether the anti-plagiarism policy implemented in the varsity after his PhD thesis was submitted can have a retrospective effect.
The syndicate also gave appointment orders to 20 persons who received PSC advice memo for the university assistant post. A four-member sub-committee has been appointed to investigate the allegations raised over the irregularities in the appointment of the faculty members in the varsity. The committee includes K.K. Haneefa, K. Vishwanath, P.M. Niyaz and C.P. Ahammed.
The meeting congratulated the controller of examinations and the staff of Pareeksha Bhavan for the timely announcement of the results. The newly- appointed assistants will be posted in the Pareeksha Bhavan which is facing a dearth of staff. The meeting also decided not to bear the additional expenses incurred from the personal escort and security given for former VC Dr M. Abdul Salam.
