PWD minister G Sudhakaran sues contractor

22-km road remains incomplete despite three warnings.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A contractor had a taste of PWD minister G. Sudhakaran’s fury on Tuesday. The minister filed a police complaint against contractor Naseeruddin of Kilimanoor for allegedly failing to complete the maintenance works on Kazhakoottam-Karamana road as per a contract. The 22-km road work worth around Rs 22 crore was not being completed by him despite three warnings served by the minister. The deadline as per the contract had officially ended on September 27 itself. With this, Mr Sudhakaran approached Kazhakoottam assistant commissioner A. Pramod Kumar and a case was registered against the contractor.

He had recently begun the work and ended it abruptly. The work on the road was completed from Kazhakoottam to Ulloor. However, the potholes here had caused several accidents on the stretch. On Tuesday, he inspected the area around Vettu road with PWD (National Highway) chief engineer K.P. Prabhakaran and walked up to Kazhakoo-ttam assistant commissioner’s office to complain.

The contractor was booked under Section 406 of IPC for criminal breach of trust. He was summoned before the police and his statements were recorded. “He was given a three-month extension to complete the road but still did not take many efforts to resume the work. He blamed the rain for non-completion of the project,” police officials said. PWD officials told Deccan Chronicle that the works were likely to be expedited as the cops had cracked the whip.
