Kerala: Cops sided with moral goons, allege activists
Thiruvananthapuram: Dalit Activists from Kulathupuzha visited the family of the girl, who was raped and killed by her relative, and had been chased away by the people of the area. After studying the situation, they pointed out that the police did not register a case against the accused. They claimed that the police had sided with the moral police to chase the family from the place.
V. B. Ajayakumar, the executive director of Rights, who visited the family on Tuesday, told Deccan Chronicle that the family was not even allowed to see the body of the girl before the burial. The girl’s mother, aunt and sister and grandmother, who were attacked by the mob, were forced to leave their residence and take shelter at a relative’s home. These women who belonged to Dalit families and were manhandled by the mob in front of the police. However, the police did not act, said Mr Ajayakumar.
The police should have taken steps to ensure that the family was allowed to continue living in their house. However, neither the police nor the authorities took these steps, said Mr Ajayakumar. District police authorities should take steps to order an inquiry into the incident. The police have already taken Rajesh, the relative of the girl into custody and during questioning he admitted that he had raped and killed the girl - who was on her way to school - and later dumped her body inside the rubber plantations at Kulathoopuzha.
