THIRUVANANTHAPRUAM: Governor P. Sathasivam’s decision to summon chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan soon after the incidents of violence rocked the capital city recently, came in for criticism at CPM state committee meeting here on Thursday. A section of members raised the matter during the discussion on the recent incidents. They felt that it was also not right on the part of Governor to summon DGP after meeting the chief minister. This clearly raised suspicion about his intentions. They believe that Governor issuing press statement after the meeting with the chief minister and DGP, had raised several eyebrows. It would not be wrong if people suspected a definite motive behind Sathasivam’s actions.
On Wednesday the CPM state secretariat had played down the Governor episode saying that there was nothing unusual about it. The secretariat felt that considering the cordial relations the state government and Governor enjoyed, there was nothing abnormal in the meeting held at Raj Bhavan. A section of CPM leaders also believes that the Governor is trying to create an impression that all peace initiatives were being taken at his behest. They point out that the state government had taken peace initiatives since it came to power. The chief minister had himself convened the meeting of CPM and RSS top leaders in Thiruvananthpuram and even in Kannur to talk peace.
Meanwhile, CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury came in for sharp criticism form a section of members in connection with Rajya Sabha elections. CPM politburo member S. Ramachandran Pillai who placed the decisions of the recent PB and central committee meetings, listed the reasons behind the denial of another term to Mr Yechury; The post of general secretary has wider responsibilities, there is a bar on giving third consecutive term in Rajya Sabha, Congress need not decide CPM candidate for the RS polls and Bengal decision to propose his name again despite PB rejecting it earlier was wrong practice.
