Minister Harsh Vardhan lauds tech for societal applications

Dr Harsh Vardhan calls for more efforts in research and development.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Dr Harsh Vardhan, union minister for Science & Technology visited the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre Thiruvananthapuram. Dr. K. Sivan, director, VSSC welcomed the union minister. A presentation on the activities of the Centre was made covering the evolution of the Indian Space Programme from its humble beginnings to the present. The presentation highlighted the indigenization efforts made and the applications benefiting society at large was highlighted as a specialty of the Indian Space Programme.

The current status of the activities of the Centre was also presented to the minister. He evinced keen interest on the various developments taking place in ISRO and in the centre in particular. The minister interacted with senior scientists of the Centre on various activities associated with it and expressed his happiness and satisfaction on the activities. He stressed that there should be synergy between various organizations carrying out R&D efforts in similar areas to help in bringing out faster results and better products for various applications.

He lauded the efforts being made for the development of various technologies for societal applications. Mr Vardhan visited major laboratories and facilities involved in design activities and digital simulation. He also visited the Hypersonic Wind Tunnel facility, the third largest in the world. He also visited the Space Museum at Mary Magdaline Church, where the Indian Space Programme had its humble beginning. The minister also visited the Control Centre at TERLS.
