Kozhikode: 200 NSS volunteers all set to fight drugs

They have undergone training and would conduct awareness campaigns.

KOZHIKODE: The Fire and Rescue Services in Kozhikode on Monday trained 200 NSS volunteers in cooperation with the district cell of the National Service Scheme. The students, mostly girls from 10 colleges across the district and volunteers from the Government Arts and Science College enrolled for a training session at the college. After the training, the students would conduct awareness campaigns in their respective colleges, said district fire officer Arun Bhaskar. He added that the usage of drugs was more in the campus and the students who had already used drugs in their school days were introducing their peers to them.

“They deal with innovative drugs with a mixture of chemicals and other tobacco products mostly. Once the fellow students are able to spread the message inside the campus, that would have an impact on peers and slowly they would in turn spread the word in society,” said Mr Arun. Calicut University vice-chancellor K. Mohammed Basheer, who inaugurated the training programme against the use of drugs as part of the international day against drug abuse, said that youngsters lost their talent and conscience due to the use of drugs. During the training, the students were given an explanation on how each of the substances affects each organ of the body and how users slowly get addicted to them. The training programme was also attended by college principal CI Sivaramakrishnan and NSS district coordinator Dr Baby Sheeba.
