Youth held for bike race in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Police seized 18 motorbikes and two cars from racers at Jubilee Hills on Sunday after the bikers got into a heated argument with traffic cops when they tried to stop them from racing. Three youths were detained for questioning.
Police sources said around 25 youths from the Old City area came to the Jubilee Hills check-post junction and started racing. When traffic police personnel objected, they started arguing. Other commuters too came in support of the bikers.
When the argument escalated, local police were called in to control the situation.
“They were picked up for questioning and let off after a warning to not repeat such incidents,” an official said.
The bikers will be counseled on Monday, said cops, adding that out of 18 bikers, around seven had no driving licenses. According to police, bike racing is not illegal as such, but racing on public roads in illegal, as it disrupts traffic.
Pointing out that constructing a bike race track could be a good option, they said that it was for the government to decide that. There are many bike racing gangs in the city. Each gang consists of around 100 members aged between 16 and 22.
Police claim that most of these people race without wearing safety gear.
The Cyberabad traffic police meanwhile conducted a drive against drunken driving on Saturday night at the Shamshabad main road leading to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and booked eight cases. Three cars, autos and two-wheelers were seized. Traffic cops said the motorists would be produced before the magistrate.
