The plan will be implemented with active public participation.

Kochi: The Malappuram district administration has come up with an extended plan for the conservation of Bharathappuzha in the wake of the National Green Tribunal’s directive for extensive conservation drive to bring the river back to life.

The new plan, named ‘Punarjani’ which includes water source preservation, river protection, prevention of contamination and public awareness programmes, will be launched on Sunday, the world environmental day, by Speaker P Sriramakrishnan at the Kelappaji Agricultural Engineering College in Thavanur, said Malappuram district collector S. The plan will be implemented with active public participation. The year-long first phase plan is supported by the Agricultural Engineering College, Malayalam University, the District Tourism Promotion Council and the Nila Conservation Council besides various youth organisations and NGOs.

“The project can never be completed without active public participation,” the collector said. Documentation of water sources, environmental studies, river conservation projects are the thrust areas of Punarjani, he said. Seminars and discussions will also be held as part of the public awareness drive.

A website will also be launched for the project. Monthly meeting to assess the progress of the project headed by the Tirur Sub collector Dr. Adila Abdullah will also be a part of the drive. Palakkad district administration will also be included in the second phase of the project.
