E P Jayarajan's son faces eco violation charge
Kannur: Revenue officials have initiated a probe on the complaint against a private company levelling hills for constructing a resort-cum-Ayurveda hospital here. The complaint is that Kannur Ayurvedic Medical Care Pvt Ltd has levelled hillslope at Udupu near Morazha under Anthoor municipality. The company’s seven directors include CPM central committee member E.P. Jayarajan’s son Puthussery Koroth Jaison, who owns 2500 shares worth to Rs 25 lakh. Pro-CPM Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) is the complainant.
Collector forwarded it to Taliparamba tahsildar and sources said geology officials are inquiring it. “Construction activities are going on there. Borewells and conventional wells are dug to tap water which would lead to water scarcity in the area, besides the threat of saline water entering water bodies. Levelling of hillslopes and impending water scarcity are in gross violation of environmental rules,” said K.V. Sajin, the local unit secretary of KSSP.
The Anthoor municipality, where the CPM has no opposition, has approved the project with an initial investment of Rs 3 crore. But municipal vice-president Shaju K. dismissed KSSP’s allegation. “There is not an iota of violation. Not a single lorry of soil had gone out. No residents have complained nor any impact on the environment,” he said.
