KSHRC to look into Sagar's sex change operation going wrong

Sagar says he was unable to move for close to two months, as the surgical incisions had become infected.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala State Human Rights Commission has assured, according to Sagar, that they will look into the case of his sex reassignment surgery at Government Medical College Hospital allegedly going wrong.

Sagar, 46, born with a female body, was seeking medical help at the hospital for sex reassignment since the nineties, but according to him, the final surgery had gone awry. He has submitted a complaint to health minister K.K. Shailaja, who is yet to respond to the case.

Sagar says he was unable to move for close to two months, as the surgical incisions had become infected. Later, he went to another hospital in Mumbai, with his friend supporting him financially. He says he feels better after the surgery in Mumbai and the wounds have healed.

While Sagar says that medical college doctors had wrongly used the skin from his leg for phalloplasty, the hospital had issued a detailed clarification in which they say it is a globally accepted practice. In its rejoinder, they insisted that the surgery was a success, and that Sagar was made aware of the final surgery’s consequences.

They say the patient was prepared for various surgeries through treatments administered by doctors in psychiatry, endocrinology, gynaecology, plastic surgery and forensic divisions. The treatments were decided after five board meetings.
