Health department allays fears over Dengue breakout

According to sources at health dept, 240 Dengue cases were reported last year, however only 17 cases are reported this year.

KOCHI: The district health department has said that there is no alarming situation regarding dengue in any part of Ernakulam district and reports coming otherwise were not true. District surveillance officer Dr Balagangadharan told DC on Sunday that this year was better compared to last year in the case of dengue cases in the district.

“Last year there were a total of 240 Dengue cases but this year so far only 17 cases have been reported. In the wake of the spurt in the number of cases last year, we mounted an extra vigil and stepped up preventive measures this year and hence the number has come down,” said Dr Balagangadharan.

He said that in the absence of rains, there did not prevail conditions conducive for breeding of mosquitoes which are the agents of Dengue. “Kothamangalam area reported two-three cases last month and there is no need to panic with regard to this area also,” Dr Balagangadharan said.

District medical officer Dr M. K. Kuttappan also assured that Dengue fever in the district was limited to isolated cases. He said that the surveillance department was constantly keeping a tab on the situation.
