HYDERABAD: Distinguished fellow for research and information system for developing countries, Prof. Amitabh Kundu, said that in the global index, countries are ranked on the basis of development in addition to equality.

India's rank could have been better than Bangladesh, but it went down due to lack of equality.

He expressed these views at a roundtable discussion "Education Policy Round Table: Education Quality, NEP & Marginalized Population" at Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU).

Prof. Kundu said equality in income, health and education is inevitable for public equality. He gave detailed data about the income, health and education indicators of Muslims and compared it with other reserved categories. Muslims lag behind in availing public health services, he pointed out.

Prof. Abdul Shaban, School of Development Studies, TISS, Mumbai opined that the academic standards of Urdu-speaking population will not improve unless they have Urdu philosophers. Attention should be paid to the curriculum. State patronage and market viability play crucial roles in the development of any language, he pointed out.

Prof. S M Rahmatullah said that Indian constitution is the best as it gives importance to equality.

“If we are not doing better at different levels we are only responsible for such a situation,” he said. He said the National Education Policy has focused on multi-disciplinary education and skills. He advised teachers to be well prepared for the classroom.

Prof. Siddiqui Mohammed Mahmood called the success of the education system, reflected a country’s success.

Moderator of the programme, Prof. Amir Ullah said that the budget for minorities should be used to offer scholarships and build infrastructure for them.
