KOZHIKODE: Coconut farmers in the region have reason to cheer the state government budget, announced on Friday by Finance Minister Thomas Isaac, as a decision has been made to start a special economic zone for promoting coconut farming, expected to pull out farmers from the distressing situation arising out of low price. The state government in its budget announcement has ensured that the SEZ will initiate several projects for large- scale production of coconut. "This was one of the best budgets announced in the recent past, where the traders, farmers, industrialists and people of all sectors have been given prominence", said K. Dasan MLA.

The coconut sector, especially in Malabar, was for a long time in a crisis but the SEZ will help boost the sector, he added. Kozhikode district alone has more than 55 coconut farmers unit, which can all be brought together under one platform. This will indirectly lead to a massive promotion of coconut farmers in the region, he further pointed out. The other major highlight of the budget was the stress given for the drinking water projects, keeping in mind the upcoming drought situation. An amount of Rs 25 crore has been allotted for the comprehensive drinking water project at Thalassery- Koothuparamba, Rs 10 crore for Faroke- Karuvanthiruthi and Rs 20 crore for Vengeri paroppadi water body.

Another reason to rejoice was the decision to convert rivers as reservoirs through regulators and check dams. Mahe, Kuttoyadi and Kadalundi were selected in this regard. M.K. Raghavan MP pointed out the government failure in not specifying the amount allotted for various projects. The amount sanctioned to move ahead with the steps to acquire additional land for Kannur- Kozhikode airport was not mentioned, he added.
