You cannot intimidate the court, CJI to Advocate

He expressed his displeasure over an advocate arguing in a higher pitch in the court, right under his nose

Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud yet again tried to inculcate discipline among the advocates practising law in the apex court.

He expressed his displeasure over an advocate arguing in a higher pitch in the court, right under his nose.

He issued a warning to him that the advocate should speak softly. Are you trying to intimidate the court, the CJI asked the advocate.

"Where do you practise usually? You can never threaten the court. In my 23 years of career, I had never seen such a situation and I do not want to face such an incident in my last year of career. Reduce your voice. Is this the way you argue in the first court of the country? Do you scream at other judges in the same manner?"

Sensing that the CJI's feelings were hurt, the advocate tendered his apology.

It is pertinent to note that such corrective measures were taken by the CJI even in the past.

The CJI warned Supreme Court Bar Association former president Vikas Singh to behave properly when he spoke loudly on the premises of the court.

In October last, the CJI became impatient when an advocate was shouting on the phone in the court hall. "Do you think it is a market to speak on the phone?"

Soon, he instructed the officials to take away all the phones from advocates when they were attending the court.
