EC probe over deletion of names from voters\' list

ANANTAPUR: Fraudulent actions relating to the voters list in Andhra Pradesh have surfaced in some areas, leading to suspension of some BLOs.

This followed a complaint from Uravakonda TD MLA Payyavula Kesav over deletion of voters in his segment. The Chief Election Commission has deputed an official, who inspected the voters' list and met voters in a village in Uravakonda.

However, sensing trouble, the Anantapur collector suspended two BLOs a day before the visit of a CEC official on Wednesday. They were charged with manipulation of voters list and deletion of voters’ names without issuing any notices to them.

Avinash Kumar, principal secretary to central government, inquired into the irregularities including deletion of the voters’ names from the electoral roll in Cheekalaparvi village in Uravakonda. The CEC-deputed official took evidence from the voters whose names had been deleted from the list.

TD legislator Kesav said names of genuine voters from Chikalparvi villages were deleted without any notice. He submitted a representation to EC with evidences.

Kesav said that while the Anantapur collector suspended two BLOs a day before the visit of the EC, he did not take action against the errant ARO and RO of Uravakonda. He said at least 6,000 votes were deleted in the Uravakonda segment alone by using volunteers and by mounting pressures on BLOs.

“We submitted a detailed report to the ECI-deputed official against the YSRC,” he said and added that many of the cases of forging of signatures were also detected. He suspected similar fraudulent actions across the state and said the TD would depute panels to identify and rectify such actions from the YSRC.

During a random survey by a TD team in the Uravakonda assembly segment, it was noticed that none of the voters got notices as per the guidelines to delete their names from the voters list, if they so desired.
