Tamilisai Soundararajan consoles kin of farmers who ended lives

The Centre also sent a team to Chennai and its surrounding areas to make an on the spot assessment.

NAGAPATTINAM: Tamil Nadu BJP president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan on Tuesday faulted the Tamil Nadu Government for its lethargic attitude in solving the farmers’ problems, which was deepening with every passing day.

Dr Tamilisai, who visited the houses of a few farmers who have committed suicide and died of shock due to crop failure in and around Nagapattinam, consoled their family members on Tuesday.

She later told newsmen that the Tamil Nadu Government approached the Union government soon after the Vardah cyclone disaster and sought fund for rehabilitation from the National disaster Management fund. The Centre also sent a team to Chennai and its surrounding areas to make an on the spot assessment.

However, the State government did not approach the Centre and seek financial assistance for providing relief to the drought-affected farmers. She suggested that the Tamil Nadu government should declare the state drought-hit immediately and seek relief from the national disaster management fund from the Centre for providing drought relief.

Dr Tamilisai also charged that while other State governments approached the Centre with their crop insurance renewal pleas, Tamil Nadu government did not take any steps for availing the crop insurance benefits from the Central government so far.
