Brain dead 4-year-old gives new lease of life to four

Jagan's heart, liver and eyes were harvested on Wednesday.

Bengaluru: Four-year-old Jagan (name changed) provided a new lease of life for four people as his parents agreed to donate his organs on Tuesday. A family trip to the city from Coimbatore turned out to be a nightmare for young Jagan's parents as the playful child slipped from the balcony of his uncle's house. He was rushed to BGS Hospital on December 25 and was declared brain dead on Monday.

Braving grief over the sudden loss, the parents agreed to go ahead and donate his son's organs, said Manjula from Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka for Transplantation (ZCCK). With this donation Jagan becomes the second youngest child to donate his organs for a greater cause. The first was a two-year-ten-month-old child from the city who donated his organs in 2014.

Jagan's organs were harvested on Wednesday and the ambulance transported the child's harvested heart from BGS Global Hospital to Fortis Malar in Chennai via Kempe Gowda International Airport. A green corridor was created from BGS hospital to KIA. The liver was transported to Narayana Hrudayalaya, Kidney at BGS hospital and eyes at Narayana Nethralaya.

Dr Smitha Thammaiah, Medical Services Head of the hospital said, “For any family this is a heart-wrenching loss to suffer. To make a crucial decision like organ donation at a difficult time is tough for any loved one. The harvested organs will benefit many lives.”
