Chennai, suburbs take a severe pounding

Waterlogging continued to be an irritant even on major thoroughfares across the metropolis.

Chennai: Heavy rain pounded the city and its suburbs from Thursday evening. The sunshine of the morning proved to be of short term comfort even as citizens struggled as the rain of the week had already inundated low-lying and the roads had taken badly to the rain bringing traffic down to the pace of snails. Waterlogging continued to be an irritant even on major thoroughfares across the metropolis.

The city received 6 cm of rainfall in 12 hours - between 8.30 am and 8.30 pm - as it poured continuously since 3 pm making it tough for office-goers to return home. The weather department has forecast heavy rains for the next two days since a low pressure has formed over the southwest Bay of Sri Lanka coast.

“With the Southwest Bay of Bengal hosting a low pressure area, scattered rainfall over Tamil Nadu is to continue on Friday. South coastal Tamil Nadu and Delta districts are likely to receive moderate to heavy rains. The regions have already recorded the maximum quantum of rainfall from the current low pressure”, is Kea Weather's forecast.
