Engineers to compile daily rain reports

Corpn ready with plans, in event of floods.

Chennai: Chennai corporation on Wednesday initiated a daily rain report card module for its workers, where zonal and area engineers have to compile five parameters like rainfall, water stagnation, water-logging in subways, trees uprooted and stormwater drain blockages in their jurisdictions.

The engineers have also been directed to ensure a free flow of traffic by clearing water stagnation and report the same on a daily basis, a corporation official said.

There are 200 wards in Chennai coming under 15 zones of the corporation. All engineers have been briefed about the standard operating procedures to be taken up at identified low-lying areas vulnerable to floods. A total of 859 areas witnessed water-logging during last December, of this 115 areas are vulnerable to flooding during a downpour. Now the engineers will monitor these areas and compile their daily report cards for further review and actions, the official explained.

Meanwhile, the corporation has invited volunteers and NGOs interested in working with the corporation to tackle monsoon and initiate relief works.

The corporation has started training volunteers to handle floods and corporation commissioner D. Karthikeyan has instructed civic officials to train volunteers and NGOs in monsoon relief and rescue operations.
