Chennai: As part of British Council and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan’s (SSA) partnership project, around 45,000 teachers from government primary and upper primary schools are to get English language training this year.
The project, which started with the aim of enhancing the teaching and learning of English in classrooms, now also will support the primary level teaching.
About 300 Block Resource Trainers (BRTs) in 2014 were trained and in turn they trained about one lakh primary teachers focusing on improving their English fluency and confidence in the classroom, developing early literacy in English.
This year, BRTs will receive further inputs from British Council on how to train teachers in effective use of activity-based learning. The three-day training is taking place in Chennai and Madurai.
“We hope the training has helped educators and teachers enhance their language skills, improve their leadership qualities and create great learning experiences in their schools,” said Alan Gemmell, director, British Council India.
“We are seeing 60 to 70 per cent improvement after the training,” said R. Malathy, senior consultant, SSA Tamil Nadu.
