MCT starts widening of old town roads in Tirupati

Tirupati:The Tirupati Municipal Corporation (MCT) has started widening of critical road stretches in the old town areas that have been causing traffic bottlenecks for more than three decades.

The first transformation is for the vital link road from Tilak Road to Thathaiahagunta area via Mallaiahgunta Katta and Jabbar layout, a distance of 400 metres. This once-narrow lane, measuring 15 feet in width, is developed to 40-feet alongside the TTD’s Sridevi complex.

Civic authorities, led by Mayor Dr R. Sirisha and deputy mayor B. Abhinay Reddy felt the widening was essential to also ensure swift movement of ambulances and fire tenders during emergency situations.

Additionally, the road adjacent to the TTD's administrative building, from Bhavani Nagar junction towards the railway colony, is also undergoing an expansion for a 500-metre stretch. This project aims to address not only traffic issues but also the long-standing problem of the huge open drain that carries rainwater from Tirumala hills during flood situations.

“Tackling traffic congestion has been a top priority for the MCT in the temple city. Apart from the recent road widening projects in Dwarka Nagar (30 feet) and Khadi Colony (40 feet), the MCT has begun creating roads connecting Padmavati Nagar and Mahila University in the 22nd Ward, constructing Seethamma Nagar Road connecting Padmavati Mahila University Road from MR Palli Circle, and developing a new road connecting Tirumala Bypass Road to KT road via Ramachandra Nagar,” the deputy mayor said.

“To facilitate these projects, the municipal body adopted the Transferable Development Rights (TDR) approach to acquire the necessary land or buildings. This helps streamline urban development while ensuring the expansion and modernization of Tirupati's road infrastructure,” he added.
