Hyderabad: 5-year-old girl slips into coma while undergoing thumb surgery

After the child did not regain consciousness, her parents were asked to go to a higher centre for neurological support.

HYDERABAD: A five-year-old girl has slipped into coma while she was undergoing a thumb corrective surgery at a private hospital here. S. Sumathari’s father Satyanarayana alleged: “My daughter was healthy and all the tests had shown that she could bear the anaesthesia. The doctors gave her higher dosage, due to which she lapsed into coma.”

After the child did not regain consciousness, her parents were asked to go to a higher centre for neurological support. The child is on ventilator support at the Institute of Neuro Sciences, Kacheguda, but the doctors are unsure about her health.

Dr Subash, who conducted the surgery, said, “I had done the hip corrective surgery for the child they came back to me for the correction of fingers. When we evaluated her before the surgery, she was healthy but the risks of complications due to anaesthesia cannot be ruled out. These complications of going into coma were explained to the family via video counselling. I have been going every day to see the child and am monitoring her situation. Her condition has deteriorated.”

When contacted, the anaesthesiologist refused to comment, saying team incharge Dr Subash was dealing with the issue. The family is worried for the child and has not lodged a police complaint. Family members protested before the Praja Sai Hospital and asked them to take action against Dr Subash.

Mr Satyanarayana, who is from Adilabad, said, “We trusted the doctor as he told us that the child as healthy and fit for surgery. How can they now tell us that things can go wrong,” the worried father asked.
