More duties for cops on Onam

To avoid drunken brawl, liquor smuggling.

KOZHIKODE: The men in khaki will be missing their Onam this year as well, but they are happy that the rest can spend their holidays with their dear ones. Considering the heavy rush and traffic chaos, the city police has beefed up the security, reinforcing their strength on streets and beachside, to control and avoid
any brawls. “The police would have to spend time in the street so that the public can spend their quality time here safely," said police commissioner S. Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar. “But this Onam, we have exempted people like the newly-married and those having a wedding in their families. As like other festivals, Onam is one occasion when we expect huge crowd especially on the streets and beaches.”

Deputy commissioner Merin Joseph said more officers would be deployed for night patrolling in the next few days and strict surveillance would be in place in the streets and public places to prevent eve-teasing, pickpocketing drunken driving and brawls. “Checkings would be there on the district borders on vehicles that smuggle liquor. Excise also would be joining the drive,” she said. “The night patrolling would also include motorcycle patrolling and special checks."
