Bhubaneshwar: Road to be named after Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa first visited Bhubaneswar in 1974.

Bhubaneswar: Coinciding with the canonisation of Roman Catholic nun Mother Teresa at the Vatican on Sunday, the Odisha government has decided to name a road in capital city Bhubaneswar after her.

According to government sources, the road linking Satya Nagar and CuttackPuri Road via flyover will be named as Mother Teresa Road.

The decision was taken after a recent request from Odisha Catholic Bishops’ Council (OCBC) to the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation.

Chairman of the Council Archbishop John Barwa of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar had urged the corporation to name the road after the late missionary, popularly known as the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.

“We are grateful to Odisha government for naming the road after Mother Teresa. It is our tribute to Mother Teresa for her invaluable contribution to humanity through her service and charity. Through the naming of a road, we all may remember the contribution of Mother Teresa and strive to serve the humanity in our own way in life,” Barwa said.

The canonisation ceremony will be led by Pope Francis in front of St. Peter’s Basilica on September 4. The pope is slated to officially declare her a saint of the Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Mother Teresa had first visited Bhubaneswar in 1974 and met the then Chief Minister Nandini Satpathy and Governor Akbar Ali Khan. Since then she visited Odisha several times.
