Part of IIIT-Basar campus turns dumping ground

The college is also facing a manpower shortage to segregate and transport the garbage to designated landfills

ADILABAD: A portion of the IIIT-Basar campus has turned into a dumping yard, as garbage, including food waste, continues to accumulate at the site, leading to concerns of unhygienic conditions among students.

The college is also facing a manpower shortage to segregate and transport the garbage to designated landfills, which compounds the issue.

Students said that the garbage dump gives out a foul smell and that lack of proper sanitary practices may lead to an upswing in seasonal diseases during the current monsoon.

A second-year student, requesting anonymity, said the piled-up garbage is polluting the environment and surroundings of the campus. “Though the dumps are away from the hostels, there is a worry that the piled-up garbage dumps will impact health, in addition to the poor quality of the food being served to the students despite the recent food poisoning,” the student said.

Nearly 9,000 students are studying on campus.
