Five test positive to swine flu in Odisha

Swine flu is a respiratory disease with symptoms that include fever, coughing, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body ache and fatigue.

Bhubaneshwar: Swine flu scare is back to haunt the denizens in Odisha as five persons have been tested positive for the avian influenza in the capital city. The H1N1 infected persons, including four women, were admitted to the isolation ward of private hospitals here in the last two days.

While three were admitted on Tuesday, two persons were hospitalised on Wednesday.

The infected persons hailed from Kalahandi, Jagatsinghpur and Khurda districts.
“Of the 124 blood samples tested so far, five tested positive for the avian flu. One of the patients, a woman of 80 years of age, is serious because she is suffering from critical heart ailments. The others are quite okay and their conditions are improving after treatment,” K.C. Dash, director of Odisha health department said.

The director informed that special isolation ward has been created in Capital Hospital for the swine flu patients. “A special isolation ward has been created in Capital Hospital where doctors and other paramedics deployed on round-the-clock basis to attend the patients. We are also taking preventive steps that the flu does not spread to new areas,” Mr Das said.

The health department, meanwhile, directed its officials to collect information from health institutions and analyse the data so as to detect cluster of cases before ensuring prompt preventive and containment measures.
