Madras HC denies bail to mom killer

The 30-year-old was accused of throwing his mother into a well and arrested on June 24.

Chennai: While saluting motherhood, Saint Adhi Sankara, said “We are here because of our mothers! The pains she took in bringing us forth alive, the several months that she carried us all within her so stoically, followed by even greater care soon after our birth - such is motherhood! Recalling these verses, the Madras high court on Tuesday denied bail to a 30-year-old man who murdered his mother by throwing her into a well in June this year.

Dismissing the bail plea of K. Sathiyakumar (30), Anna Nagar West Extension, Justice S. Vaidyanathan said “When a Sanyasi, who has renounced his family felt the importance of performing the last rites to his mother, Sathiyakumar, who is a family man and all along with his mother, without even having regard that she brought him up and fed him, is alleged to have murdered her. Hence, this court is not inclined to grant the relief sought by the petitioner.”

Sathiyakumar was arrested and remanded to judicial custody on June 24. The J.J. Nagar police registered case against him under section 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 302 (punishment for murder) IPC. He approached the high court seeking bail.

According to prosecution, Sathiyakumar committed the murder by throwing his mother into a well. When the matter came up for hearing, counsel for Sathiyakumar submitted his bail petition was dismissed for default by trial court earlier.

The judge said “At this juncture, I am reminded of saint Adhi Sankara, who took up Sanyasa very much against the will of his mother Aryamba, with a condition that he should be present near her death bed and also perform the obsequies. As per her wish, Adhi Sankara was near his mother Aryamba at the time of her death and also performed the funeral ceremony.” The judge said he was not inclined to grant bail to the petitioner.
