Junked vehicles towed out of Secretariat and dumped on Nizam College grounds

Famous venue was sought after for political rallies addressed by the who’s who of the Indian politics

Hyderabad: The Nizam College grounds have been turned into an automobile junk yard by the Telangana government. On Wednesday, hundreds of junked vehicles that used to lie in the parking lots of the Secretariat were towed out with the assistance of the police andd dumped on the grounds of Nizam College.

The Telangana High Court had last Monday dismissed petitions against the government’s plans to demolish the Secretariat and build a new one in its place. The removal of the junked automobiles is being seen as a prelude to a cleanup of the complex as the government makes plans for the demolition.

However, Nizam College authorities were not informed that their ground would be used as a dump yard for abandoned vehicles. The college is administered by Osmania University. When asked about Wednesday’s development, a university official said the government did not seek the university's permission to park vehicles on its premises. There was no correspondence on the matter at all, the official said.

Prof. Lakshmi Reddy, an alumni and retired professor of Nizam College, said: “It’s not only a surprise, but it’s bad news. This college produced some of India’s greatest national and international personalities. These grounds gave birth to many international sports personalities. And now the government has turned it into a junkyard.”
