Hyderabad: Toxic nala gets retaining wall

The wall is meant to prevent water from the nala entering the colony.

Hyderabad: A Rs 5-crore retaining wall has been sanctioned for the nala that runs past Dharaninagar. The residents had faced a health scare during last monsoon after sewerage water and froth entered their homes. The wall is meant to prevent water from the nala entering the colony.

It will be a permanent solution, said contractor Venkatesh Goud. The wall wil run for 600 metres, The base of the nala will be concretised.

Dharaninagar Welfare Ass-ociation president G. Gopal said the contractor and the local MLA had assured that the project will be completed. But the toxicity and illegal dumping of chemical waste in the nala is unresolved.”

The nala water was found to have double the normal levels of phosphates and nitrates in June this year after white froth covered it after the first rains. The PCB cited the main reason to be untreated sewerage containing detergents, which will continue to be released in the revamped nala, through an underground pipe.
