DTPC to form beach circuit in Vypeen

Move to help reduce rush on Kuzhippilli and Cherayi beaches during holidays.

KOCHI: The District Tourism Promotion Council will form a beach circuit in the district by linking nine beaches, whose potential is yet to be fully tapped, under its jurisdiction that come under Vypeen Assembly constituency. This decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Prof K.V. Thomas MP at Cherai on Saturday. The beaches to be connected are Puthuvype, Chappa, Njarakkal, Nayarambalam, Chathanad, Kuzhippilli, Raktheswari, Munambam and Cherayi.

The move has been initiated in the wake of the unprecedented rush in Kuzhippilli and Cherayi beaches during holidays. The formation of the circuit proposes to divert the extra crowd to other beaches. The meeting was attended by Vypeen MLA S. Sarma, Fort Kochi Sub-Collector and DTPC Secretary S Suhas, Muziris special officer K.S. Shine and panchayat presidents of Pallipuram and Kuzhippilli and heads of various departments, among others.

Suhas said that a project had been conceived to rebuild the sea wall on Cherai beach at a cost of '55 lakh. He also said that administrative sanction had been granted to build a refreshment cum toilet centre at the beach at a cost of Rs 25 lakh. A master plan will be readied for the comprehensive development of all the beaches. The final project will be readied after convening a meeting of higher officials in the departments of tourism, irrigation, harbour engineering, Kerala Water Authority and PWD.

Suhas also said that Cherai beach would be developed as a model beach. Various facilities would be provided for visitors at the beaches which are part of the tourism circuit. Facilities will be provided at the beaches for staging entertainment programmes during holidays. A project would be prepared for pilgrim tourism connecting various places of worship in Vypeen, he added.
