Osmania varsity on Lockdown
Hyderabad: As the Telangana government marked formation day on Thursday, Osmania University remained tense with students directing much ire towards Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.
The university's campus remained on lockdown all day and outsiders were denied entry. The OU Joint Action Committee, a combine of nearly 60 different student organisations, had called to conduct a public meeting on the campus on Formation Day. Exams however, went on peacefully.
While the police denied detaining students, OU students claimed that students who had come from other districts to participate in the public meeting were picked up by police. Nearly 1,000 students attended the meeting. Students said the several promises, including one lakh jobs, the lack of a vice Chancellor for OU, lack of recruitments for teaching positions had not been fulfilled.
Congress leaders Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and Sridhar Babu were arrested as they tried to enter the campus at night to participate in the meeting. Telangana Telugu Desam Party working president, Revanth Reddy managed to get into the university on a two-wheeler and spoke at the meeting.
