Kerala: Kids endorse UN drive against abuse
Alappuzha: Students at Brightland Discovery School will observe the UN's International Day of Innocent Children - victims of aggression- on June 4 to spread the message against child abuse. They want children to get protection from physical, emotional and sexual assaults. They will highlight the right to association, universal state-paid education and health care, appropriate criminal laws, protection of civil rights and freedom from discrimination on race, gender, sexual orientation or nationality.
“We want to propagate the message around us,” they told a press meet here on Thursday. On August 19, 1982, the U N General Assembly called upon the global community to observe June 4 as the day of child victims of aggression, given a high number of innocent Palestinian and Lebanese children falling victim to Israeli aggression. “We rarely remember this day when we celebrate days of mothers, fathers, woman and even lovers with great importance,” the school's founder Usha Venkatesh said.
“We focus on issues like sexual abuse identification and prevention, treatment at home, school and from relatives and neighbours. It will help the society understand how the elders exploit children and will go a long way in creating a healthy and peaceful life for the child.” A UN study says 98 percent of children worldwide get no protection against corporal punishment and 150 million girls and 73 million boys experienced different forms of sexual violence.
