HYDERABAD: Within days of the Secunderabad Cantonment opening five arterial roads, residents’ celebrations have soured due to multiple issues that are hindering them from making full use of the new roads.
Many complained that access to roads continues to be restricted by the local military authority (LMA), despite the defence ministry not specifying any additional condition.
“Only two-wheelers and cars are being allowed through these roads. Autorickshaws and pedestrians aren't allowed. I remember people taking morning walks on these calm roads, but this isn't being permitted anymore,” said Padma L.V., a resident of Ammuguda.
A second resident, Anvesh Kumar Yadav, was unhappy with Army personnel manning the entry and exit points, and checking IDs. “I wonder why the regular police aren't doing it,” Yadav said.
A third resident, Padma, said that those who were unaware of autorickshaws not being allowed had to take a long detour or find alternative routes to reach their homes.
Residents complained that Richardson Road, a key internal stretch, was not opened fully, with entry/exit points at Bison Park and the training being blocked.
“Richardson Road is an important road for the people in the Cantonment area. If the remaining part of the road is opened, it can reduce the travel distance from 1 km to 100 metres, as it does away with diversions or detours,” said Jeetender Surana, another resident.
Residents said that if the Secunderabad Cantonment Board was unable to do anything about the issues, it must apprise the defence ministry of the same in a compliance report that is to be sent by May 4.
SCB CEO Madhukar Naik said that he would be inspecting the claims. “I chose to inspect the road openings just a day in advance so as that the report I share on Thursday would be accurate. The partial opening of Richardson Road is a big issue, especially given that its opening was the most sought-after by residents and commuters. Once we inspect these issues tomorrow, we shall speak with the LMA and the same will go into our compliance report,” he said.
