Flora and fauna gutted in Kozhikode

K. Vasukuttan, a resident nearby, said that it was not known whether it was wild fire or man-made.

Kozhikode: The flora and fauna in a 2.5-acre land on a hillock at Mangalad, Ayancheri near Vadakara, was gutted in a massive fire on Thursday. There were no human casualties as it is an uninhabited area. But the vegetation and various creatures, including snakes and porcupines, were charred. The fire was doused by the fire and safety personnel from Vadakara.

K. Vasukuttan, a resident nearby, said that it was not known whether it was wild fire or man-made. He urged the authorities to probe into it and assess the damage to the flora and fauna of the area.

The land, locally known as Maavullathil Meethal, Panayullathil Paremmal, is a remote place owned by a private person. Local residents allege that people from far-off places used to come to the place for drinking and other anti-social activities.
