Top cop post row: Ball set rolling for T P Senkumar
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday said that steps to reinstate DGP Senkumar were initiated as per the legal advice of the advocate general. While replying to the notice for an adjournment motion moved by M. Ummer of the IUML, he said chief secretary Nalini Netto had started making the necessary arrangements after receiving the online copy of the Supreme Court verdict. Following his reply, speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan denied the opposition the permission to the adjournment motion which prompted them to stage a walkout.
Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala before walking out said it was a shame that the chief minister was unable to specify who the DGP in charge of law and order was. Evading answers: Mr Chennithala during question hour pointed out that the chief minister was continuously evading questions relating to the police department. He said he had ignored 113 questions on April 25, including those from the treasury benches, in violation of the rights of the legislators. Speaker, who observed that the allegations should be taken seriously, directed the CM to examine the matter.
Earlier, Mr Chennithala told the Assembly that senior Congress leader P. T. Thomas would file a petition seeking a case registered against the minister for his alleged derogatory remarks against women. He said the opposition did not want to disrupt assembly proceedings over their protest as many important issues are to be taken up and discussed in the House. Meanwhile, Kerala Administrative Reforms Commission chairman and veteran CPM leader V. S. Achuthanandan on Tuesday hoped the government would implement the Supreme Court directive on T. P. Senkukmar without further delay.
Replying to questions from mediapersons here, the veteran leader said the Supreme Court was the highest court in the country and its direction was binding. This is the second time in past ten days that the veteran leader has insisted on government implementing the apex court verdict at the earliest. Those close to the veteran leader say that Achuthanandan was not in favour of government filing a review petition. Instead he wants the government to honour the verdict.
