Thrissur: Sample fireworks of the Thrissur Pooram will he held on Wednesday evening. At 7 p.m, Thiruvambady Devaswom will light up fireworks at Thenkkinkkad Maidan to be followed by Paramekkavu. The works of installing fire hydrants as a part of PESO’s safety parameters are in progress at Thekkinkkad Maidan, the venue of the fireworks. Farm Minister V.S. Sunil Kumar has allotted Rs 1.5 crore from his MLA fund for the hydrants which will be under the fire and safety officials and officers of Disaster Management.
Both Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady devaswoms started shifting their fireworks to the magazines in the maidan on Tuesday. Pits are also being dug in the maidan to place and launch the approved amittu, gunds and Kuzhiminis during the sample fireworks and for the main fireworks at 3 a.m. on May 6. Thrissur Pooram will begin on the morning of May 5 and will end by noon the next day. Thrissur Range IG M Ajithkumar on Tuesday said that a total of 3,500 civil police officers would be on duty for the smooth and safe conduct of the pooram.

North Zone ADGP will be supervising the police for the pooram. A total of five SPs, 25 DySPs, 55 CIs and 260 SI will be put on duty. Considering the safety of women devotees and pooram enthusiasts as many as 160 women cops will be deployed at the pooram venue. The district Collector issued an order on Tuesday banning liquor and narcotic substances for 42 hours starting from 8 p.m. on Thursday till 2 p.m. on Saturday in view of the pooram in Thrissur Corporation. “The sale and possession of liquor and narcotic substances are banned in the Thrissur Corporation limit during the 42-hour-ban,” Collector A. Kowsigan said.
