THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In what is considered a first for the state, a young legislator, Congress MLA K S Sabarinathan, will tie the knot with an IAS officer, Thiruvananthapuram sub-collector Dr Divya S Iyer. This was announced by Sabarinathan himself in a Facebook post on Tuesday. In a short message he posted along with a selfie with his prospective bride, Sabarinathan said that their association began in Thiruvananthapuram. He said he did not want to call the match the result of a love affair.

"When we started talking to each other, it was clear that there were similarities in ideals, likes and attitude towards life,” his FB post said. The union was arranged by both the families. Sabarinathan, before he became the youngest MLA at 32 by winning the Aruvikkara by-election in 2015, was senior manager at TCS. The youngest son of late Congress leader G Karthikeyan and Dr M T Sulekha, he completed his B Tech in electrical engineering from College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram, and MBA from Management Development Institute, Gurgaon. The multi-talented Dr Divya Iyer, who is 32, was the 48th rank holder in the all-India Civil Services Examination, 2013.

A native of the capital city, Divya did her schooling in Holy Angels Convent here, and had completed MBBS degree from the Christian Medical College, Vellore. She cracked the top 50 of the civil service while she was doing her PG in neuroscience. She was a regular winner of the 'Kalathilakam' title in her school and college days. Dr Divya is the daughter of retired ISRO employee Shesha Iyer and retired SBT employee Bhagavati Ammal. Divya has also authored four books: ‘Path Finder’, ‘The Bane of Party Drugs’, ‘The Indian Woman’ and ‘Applied Diplomacy’. A multi-tasker, she had also lent her voice to a campaign video to popularise voting among the youth in the run up to the last Assembly elections.
