Power supply to Sri Gokulam Public School snapped
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The district administration snapped the electricity supply to Sri Gokulam Public School, Mamom, Attingal, on Monday for violating the order against reopening of the schools before May 20. A school bus belonging to the institution was seized and district collector Biju Prabhakar has ordered Chirayankeezhu police to seize the rest of the school vehicles.
The ban against premature reopening was given on Sunday to protect the children from the harsh summer heat that has claimed many lives so far. The collector is empowered to take action under section 33 and 34 of disaster management rules and CrPC 144 (1) against the school, the collector said.
The school management claimed that the children were assembled to give them their uniforms. The collector said that examinations can be conducted without children being made to wear uniforms and that the order would be revoked if the temperature goes down.
Meanwhile, the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights which took note of the issue has directed the state to ensure that no school is reopened before the end of the summer. Many schools in the state have roofing made of tin sheet or GI sheet making the heat harsh for them. The tiled and concrete roofing also are not bearable for children now, the commission observed.
