2BHK scheme spells further trouble for TS govt

Hyderabad: The state government has 80,000 double bedroom houses ready for allotment in the GHMC limits, for which the corporation has received 7,09,718 applications.

GHMC officials in coordination with the Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Sangareddy and Medchal-Malkajgiri collectorates have identified 4,56,676 applications and processed 3,66,059 of them. Officials are non-plussed with this huge mismatch.

The survey to verify applicants at the address given in their respective applications started last July.

Of the approximately 7 lakh applications, the GHMC filtered out one lakh in the first round as these were from outside the corporation jurisdiction.

The corporation removed the names of 2,53,102 applicants after the door-to-door survey and identified 4.5 lakh-odd applicants. They began processing 3,66,059 applications.

Then the field staff visited each of the remaining applicants to verify their voter card, constituency and other credentials. Many applicants were untraceable, having either changed their contact numbers or shifting residence.

Official sources said that the lion's share of 2BHK units apart from the ones constructed in slums will be given to henchmen of the ruling party. Though it would be a lottery system, the names in the chits will be of party workers who were lured during elections, they claimed.

Despite authorities denying such irregularities, sources told Deccan Chronicle that the government would face trouble as they had kept the beneficiaries waiting for over five years and it would be difficult to satisfy 3.6 lakh eligible beneficiaries as only 80,000 2BHK units were ready for distribution.
