Kudumbashree workers unwilling to cooperate with pilot project

The corporation is now planning to expand the project to outer divisions where the Kudumbashree waste collection is not active.

Kozhikode: The aerobic bin waste management project launched in six wards of Kozhikode Municipal Corporation on a pilot basis last year is facing Kudumbashree ire. Its sanitation fear the loss of their revenue from collecting the waste manually from households. They also feel that the expansion of the waste disposal at source would cast a shadow on their chances of permanent employment with the civic body as sanitation workers. The corporation is now planning to expand the project to outer divisions where the Kudumbashree waste collection is not active.

The project allows faster decomposition of solid waste into manure using aerobic bins, avoiding the mess and smells. “While launching the project, we thought of taking the help of Kudumbashree workers for its successful implementation. However, due to their non-cooperation, we have to focus on areas where they are not active,” said health standing committee chairman K. V. Baburaj.

The corporation will also allocate the amount in the plan fund for the expansion of the scheme launched in June in Thiruthiyad, Eranhipal- am, Chakkorathukulam, Athanikkal, Karapar- amba and Nadakkavu wards. Centre for Research and Development in Health, Hygiene and Environment (CRDHHE) is the implementing agency. “We now have 2000 to 3000 households using the aerobic bin technology. Around 500 houses in Thiruvannur recently got them,” CRDHHE executive director Dr Reena Anilkumar said.
