Indian Naval Academy issue: CWRDM submits report

However the report was unable to confirm whether the contamination was due to the sewage treatment plant of the INA as alleged by the locals.

KANNUR: The Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) submitted its study report on the water samples collected from the premises of the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala to the Kannur District Collector on Thursday. The report confirmed that the water samples collected from the INA as well as from outside the campus was contaminated by the presence of bacteria.

However the report was unable to confirm whether the contamination was due to the sewage treatment plant of the INA as alleged by the locals. It is learnt that the Kannur District administration is also waiting for the Pollution Control Board (PCB) report which is expected in another week. “We hope that both reports together give us a concrete idea about the contamination issue. With the CWRDM report alone we cannot identify the source of contamination,” said an official.

The water samples collected from five kilometers away from the treatment plant was also showing the same contamination level, according to the CWRDM report. “To specifically trace the reason behind the contamination, we need to have a detailed study which would be time consuming. We have suggested some measures to be taken to reduce the contamination,” said a CWRDM official to DC. Locals have been organizing a protest in front of INA for the last one month alleging water contamination .
