India top IT outsourcing destination, says official
Kozhikode: India was among the top countries in the world on most parameters which characterize digital economy, said Union Electronics & IT Additional Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar. He added that India was a well known global powerhouse of IT/ITeS outsourcing. But it was also emerging as a destination for electronics manufacturing and start-ups. He was delivering the foundation day lecture at the Central University of Kerala (CUK) on Thursday on the topic ‘Digital Technologies as a Tool of Transformation.’
“India is the top IT outsourcing destination of the world. We are proud of the fact that we do nearly 56 percent of global outsourcing. Indian IT industry has a presence in over 200 cities in 80 countries worldwide. More than 75 percent of Fortune 500 companies of the world are catered to by Indian IT,” he said. Dr Ajay Kumar hailed the Akshaya programme launched in Kerala and termed it as an unique rural initiative which has become the backbone of the Digital India initiative.
“Through the Digital India programme, the Government has been able to make dramatic improvements. Achievements of two and half decades have been achieved or excelled in two and half years. This has also led to an explosion of data growth in the country,” he said. He termed data as the new oil and said that India’s reserve of data was increasing exponentially. CUK Chancellor Dr Virender Lal Chopra presided over the eighth foundation day ceremony. Vice-Chancellor Dr G Gopakumar among others were also present.
