Chalissery temple fireworks cancelled

50 kg of Chinese fireworks kept for the fest did not have display licence.

Thrissur: The fireworks at the Mulayamparabathukkavu temple festival at Chalissery bordering Thrissur district were cancelled as it was found that 50 kg of Chinese fireworks kept by the Pooram committee did not have display licence. As per sources at the DySP’s office in Shornur, the temple committee was making preparations for the fireworks when the police found that there was no proper licence with the organisers. The police seized 50 kg of Chinese fireworks and slapped a case against the organisers.

The fireworks meant to be held on Tuesday midnight were cancelled and the organisers tried to hush-up the matter, alleged the anti-firework activists. Shornur DySP K.M. Saidali said, “A case has been registered by Chalissery police, but only after a detailed inquiry, charges will be slapped against the organisers.” Kerala Festival Co-ordination Committee convenor P. Sasikumar told DC that none of the festival organisers had taken up the matter with the committee and that his organisation did not know of the details.

Anti-firework activist and Heritage Animal Task Force general secretary V.K. Venkithachalam said that gundus, kuzhi minal and dynamites, which were included in the unauthorised category by the explosives department, were used in the fireworks at this temple fest till last year. He welcomed the police move to file a case on the issue.
