Chennai: Smart' T Nagar to solve traffic woes

Traffic and Parking management is the first subject to be dealt under the smart city project.

Chennai: Thanks to the smart city project, T. Nagar, the most congested hub of Chennai, will have new solutions for its parking chaos and traffic management by the first quarter of this year. After formulating the Chennai Smart City special purpose vehicle last month, the city corporation is to invite tenders for the first phase of the smart city project by the end of January. The first phase will bring in new solutions for T Nagar's perennial issues like congestion, parking menace, traffic snarls and pollution.

Traffic and Parking management is the first subject to be dealt under the smart city project. This phase will see the computerisation of all parking lots in T Nagar.

A mobile app is also getting ready for T Nagar where the motorists can park using the app and the billing payments are also likely to be monitored through an automated process, city corporation commissioner D. Karthickeyan said.

According to corporation sources, the civic body is holding talks with consultants to provide them with solutions for the long pending civic issues ranging from waste management to water conservation. Tax collection and revenue generation is also a key area where the corporation is now focused on. Similarly the corporation is also to focus on Mylapore, where the ancient locality is to be beautified and designed as per the latest designs and planning as per the smart city proposal.

The special purpose vehicle tasked with the project's implementation will also focus on streetlights, storm water drain, drinking water connection and smart governance.

This project will see the centre releasing a first instalment of Rs 100 crore for each city selected under the project and the overall funding will be a joint venture between the state and centre, sources said.
