Cyclone Ockhi: Rehabilitation centres opened in Kollam

As many as 81 families were rehabilitated in relief camps at various spots in the district.

KOLLAM: As heavy rain continued for the second day, sea erosion intensified along coastal Kollam, including Eravipuram, Kakkathoppe, Kulathumpadam, Thanni and Mundakkal Papanasam areas. As many as 81 families were rehabilitated in relief camps at various spots in the district. District collector Dr. S. Karthikeyan visited the coastal region and the harbours, including Neendakara and Vadi, assuring compensation for the victims. The district administration has also ensured coordination of various agencies and government departments for swift action in the disaster-affected areas.

Three new relief camps were opened in Pathanapuram to address the calamities that have gripped eastern Kollam. As many as 130 houses were partially damaged in Punalur area alone. The families along the coastal Kollam where sea shows its fury have been shifted to relief camps in Cheriyazheekkal and Eravipuram.

Several fishermen are still stranded in the sea off Kollam shore despite relief activities led by the Navy and Coast Guard. A boat Velankanni Matha with four crew members that set off from Thangasseri the other day is yet to be traced. Four crew members of the boat Kalvari Nathan were rescued and brought to Neendakara on Friday. As many as 13 fishermen rescued are under treatment at Neendakara hospital and district hospital in Kollam.
